What Basement Floor Paint to Buy and Where to Buy it.

Basement Waterproofing Products

Basement waterproofing products can be costly depending on the severity of the moisture in your basement.  Most waterproofing products will need to be done by professionals but there are some solutions that are DIY.

First here are some of the issues with having a wet basement and some of the benefits of having a properly waterproofed basement:

  • Increased property value.
  • Wet basements create the perfect environment for termite activity.
  • Trapped musty air in basements travel to upper living areas in buildings.
  • Wet basements have excessive mold and mildew.
  • Mildew in drywall is known to be toxic.
  • Wet basements promote allergic discomfort.
  • Wet basements add to humidity THROUGHOUT the house.
  • Wet basements cost more to heat, as it takes more energy to heat damp air.
  •  Waterproofed basments provide a structurally sound foundation.
  • A warmer basement during winter.
  • Increased living space.
  • Safeguard anything stored in basement

As you can see having a dry basement is imperative.

There are two basic types of basement waterproofing products available (that are effective). Basement moisture can occur in any sub-soil or below grade basement.  The first needs to be done at the time of construction and is referred to as “Tanking”.  Tanking is the application of a membrane or bonding material to the exterior of your basement wall.  This creates a seal that will prevent water from entering the basement.  If you are a do it yourselfer then you can try doing this on the interior walls of your basement using a waterproof masonary paint.

One of the most common solutions is an “Exterior Foundation Drain” or “French Drain” by many in the construction industry. The drain is a system that is built on the outside wall of your foundation and diverts water through a ground drainage system away from the basement walls.  Basically, this is similar to the rain spouts you have on your roof.

Though both methods are effective you should also have a sump pump in your basement if it is truly prone to flooding.
